Throw Back Thursday: Salt Flatts 2014

My dad has had the dream to race at the Boneville Salt Flatts during speed week and this past year he was able to do it.  Unfortunately, when the officials did the technical exam of the his car they didn't like his roll cage but Dad wasn't going to let that stop him (some of his buddies thought he was crazy so he bet them a dollar he could fix it and compete still...*spoiler* that dollar is hanging up in his office).

When Dad was able to get his car into the race we all decided that we wanted to support him and so we came up with a t-shirt design.  The front said "Nut'n Fitz" which is my Dad's favorite saying and on the back we have our last name and "886" his car number.  Making those shirts were a pain in the behind, but luckily I got lots of help from my mom and sisters and they turned out great.

On the day of the race we showed up and the half of the Salt Flatts were flooded but the race track was unaffected (an upside to the rain is it was not as hot as I thought it would be).  Dad set up tents and we ate as we waited for his turn to line up.  The twins were amazing and we kept them in the shade pretty much the entire time (minus the times we took a few pictures with them).  Joy did well too and lots of the spectators thought it was pretty cool to see a dog and little kids at the event (quite a few commented that it was awesome that we were starting them young).

Once it was time for dad to line up a few of us went to the sidelines to watch while others went with Dad to the starting line.  We got to watch a few other cars get their time recorded and it was crazy to see all the different types of vehicles that raced (there was even a VW Bus).  Soon it was Dad's turn and we all got really excited as we saw him take off (we were also relieved that he was safe).  Clay got to drive the chase car and he had lots of fun getting the van to go insanely fast down the Salt Flatts.

Dad got up to 96 mph (and he added a new engine this year and is hoping to go 115 mph) and he got to do a totally of 6 runs over the weekend.  It was such unique experience and it was awesome to spend with the family.  I am glad that we got to support Dad and we can't wait to do it again!
